Help With Taxes, When To Ask For Assistance

0

People ask for tax help all the time.  This could be a business owner that needs direction or an individual who has questions pertaining to income tax.  The most important thing is that anyone responsible for filing taxes, regardless of type, needs to know when to seek tax help.  Asking for assistance is nothing to be embarrassed about in that millions of people do it all the time.

It is important to remember that tax laws change frequently.  For anyone not educated and trained in the tax world, it would be impossible to stay current.  People that provide tax help are dedicated to providing clients with excellent support but these professionals are also required by law to take courses and learn about modifications, deletions, and additions of new taxes.  For this reason, it would not be feasible for someone in another type of business to have all the answers.

Unfortunately, some people allow pride to stop them from asking for tax help and as a result, these people find themselves in serious financial trouble, and perhaps legal trouble.  The professionals that provide tax guidance are true experts that treat every client with the upmost respect and integrity, rather than talk down.  Someone who is highly skilled in providing tax help would be able to clearly answer questions and outline strategies while including the individual in the process.  With that, the person asking for help would have an opportunity to learn.

Today, a number of online tax experts actually answer live questions without charging anything.  In addition, the internet offers a wealth of information but often, some of the questions people have are complicated whereby simply searching for tax help online would not work.  Of course, there is the professional tax preparer and consultant that would know a lot about all types of tax questions.  Although there would be a charge for this person’s services, if the issue needing to be discussed were complex, it would be worth the investment to get professional tax help.

One consideration for people that need tax help is always to find an expert in that particular area.  Now, some tax experts are highly skilled and knowledgeable in all facets of tax whereas others have areas of specialty.  For instance, if a new business owner needed tax help pertaining to his or her employees, then the tax expert being sought out should have in-depth experience and education in all areas of employee tax issues.  On the other hand, if tax help were needed for liability tax, or back taxes, the professional should have expertise in this particular tax arena.

In addition to looking at tax preparers, tax help can also come from a tax advisor, accountant, or CPA.  Now, if someone were looking for guidance from a tax preparer, the price for that person’s services would obviously be much less than getting tax help from a CPA.  Therefore, it is recommend that someone needing help start by conducting research online and then asking one of the free experts.  However, if the answers needed are still not provided, this person could then look for tax help from a tax preparer or tax advisor, followed by an accountant and then CPA.

Depending on the type of tax help needed, it would be important to question whether the support provided is guaranteed.  As an example, if someone were going to a tax preparer seeking help in having income tax calculated, prepared, and filed, then the tax preparer should offer a guarantee on his or her work that if the person filing taxes were to be audited, complete support at the expense of the tax prepared would be offered.  H&R Block is a popular company for doing taxes and they have an excellent guarantee on all tax help provided.

If tax help were being requested as to consequences of setting up a business one way versus another way, then a tax preparer would be the wrong expert to assist.  In this case, an account or CPA would be the better choice simply because that professional’s knowledge base would be more extensive.  In fact, for decisions such as this, it might be necessary for the individual to also work with a business attorney so the tax help would fall in line with any legal concerns.

Obviously, tax help comes in many different forms and for many different reasons.  Each person would need to first identify the type of question or direction needed and then begin the process of finding the appropriate professional to assist.  Now, there will be times when a person knows that tax help is needed but be unsure as to the exact type of help or the person may know the type of help but not be sure the right type of professional to consult with.

The key is to start somewhere without beginning with an accountant or CPA.  Typically, someone needing help with taxes could consider talking to a free expert online or calling a tax advisor from a reputable source.  One important note is that for anyone looking for tax help from an online expert at no charge or from anyone at all, personal or business information should never be provided.  The only time specifics of any kind would be discussed is if an in-person meeting was established.  Unfortunately, not all people are honest although most providing tax help are.
